Since Christ accomplished his work of human redemptiion and of the perfect glorification of God principally through his Paschal Mystery, in which by dying he has destroyed our death, and by rising restored our life, the sacred Paschal Triduum of the Passion and Ressurrection of the Lord shines forth as the high point of the entire litugical year. There, the pre-eminence that Sunday has in the week, the Solemnity of Easter has the in the Liturgical year. (Missal p.132,18)

Season of Lent 2024

Friday Penance

“…The Bishops [of England & Wales]… wish to remind us that every Friday is set aside as a special day of penitence, as it is the day of the suffering and death of The Lord. They believe it is important that all the faithfull be united in a common, identifiable act of Friday penance because they recognise that the virtue of penitence is best acquired as part of a common resolve and common witness.

The law of the Church requires Catholics on Fridays to abstain from meat, or some other form of food, or to observe some other form of penance laid down by the Bishop’s Conference [Canon 1251]. The Bishops have decided to re-establish the practice that this penance shoudl be fulfilled simply by absatining from meat and by uniting this to prayer. Those who cannot or choose not to eat meat as part of their normal diet shold abstain from some other food of which they regularly partake. This decision will come into effect from Friday 16 September 2011.”

From a statement of the Catholic bishops of England & Wales, 13th May 2011.
